Irvine CA area dermatologist compares Juvéderm and Perlane fillers procedure for lasting results

Both Juvéderm and Perlane can smooth and soften the wrinkles and folds that circle the sides of the nose and corners of the mouth. While you can get these lines at a young age due to genetics and your unique bone structure, these nasolabial folds as they are called, are most often associated with aging.

With age, facial and supportive tissues lose their elasticity due in part to a loss of underlying fat. The fat pad attached to the cheekbones and the cheek skin sags downward toward the mouth and nose. Nasolabial folds are also known as smile or laugh lines, because when you smile the muscles at the corners of the mouth create a depression. Repeated smiling and facial expressions over time deepen this line and make it appear more prominent.

Tired of looking older than you feel?

Dr. Arta Farshidi is adept at injecting dermal fillers. This dermatological treatment can be made from many different types of substances. One of the most common substances used in dermal fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA). Your body makes this molecule on its own. HA adds softness and moisture to the skin. As with other natural substances such as collagen, the body produces less HA over time.

Juvéderm and Perlane are both made from hyaluronic acid. As an HA-based gel, these products are evenly injected into the facial tissues with a thin gauge needle. The correct technique is crucial to get the desired result from treatment, which makes administration of this filler by a licensed and experienced professional a must.

Juvéderm is actually a family of filler products. Sister products include Voluma, which is designed to add volume to sunken or flat cheeks. Perlane is actually a member of the Restylane family of fillers. Perlane is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe facial folds and wrinkles. Juvéderm Ultra Plus is also designed to treat moderate to severe folds. Restylane and some Juvéderm products include lidocaine to make the treatment as comfortable as possible.

If the area is swollen following treatment, a cold pack can be applied. Generally, common side effects at the injection site such as tenderness, redness, and firmness resolve within a few days.

Juvéderm Ultra Plus contains larger particles. The larger the particles, the thicker the gel and generally the longer the results. Juvéderm Ultra Plus can last for up to a year with proper treatment. Perlane is also considered a long-lasting filler, with results still noticeable 6 to 12 months after treatment. Perlane is made from larger particles and thicker than other temporary fillers.

These longer-lasting fillers treat more serious signs of aging, such as deeper folds. They can also be injected deeper into the tissues than some thinner products.
