Your Orange County dermatologist offers tips on skin care for aging complexions

Aging is a natural part of life and we cannot escape it. The visible effects of age, however, can be minimized when you take the time to create effective, nourishing skin care routines. Your Orange County dermatologist offers five tips on developing healthy skin care habits for aging skin.

Tip #1

Become sun savvy. We often hear this with regard to protecting our skin from the harmful effects of UV rays, such as skin cancer. Sun protection is important, as well, to prevent what is called “photoaging,” the premature aging of skin. Sun savvy people:

  1. Seek shade during peak hours of 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. A good rule of thumb is to stay in the shade as much as possible when your shadow is shorter than you are.
  2. Cover up with protective clothing such as a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves, and pants. Wearing gloves, as well, when working in the garden keeps the hands protected from early signs of aging such as sun spots and wrinkles. Fine lines around the eyes can be reduced by wearing sunglasses.
  3. Wear sunscreen daily. The current recommendation for sunscreen wear is to use a broad-spectrum product with SPF 30 or higher. When visiting the beach or a pool, sunscreen should have water resistance and should be reapplied regularly throughout the day.

Tip #2

Forgo trips to the indoor tanning salon. The rays from tanning beds and sun lamps are at least as harmful as those of direct sunlight during peak hours.

Tip #3

Moisturize skin daily. With age comes dryness. With dryness comes fine lines and wrinkles. Applying a suitable moisturizer and lip balm daily goes a long way toward nourishing and moisturizing the skin.
